In the movie The Storm Warriors, Ekin Cheng scribes love letters to his lover (played by Charlene Choi). But the Hong Kong actor-singer, who was in town recently to promote the wuxia sequel to Storm Riders, which also stars Aaron Kwok, says while "letters are a very romantic gesture", his handwritten characters in real life do not look good enough.
He did write a love letter to his girlfriend, once. "I place a lot of matters in my heart and will not talk about them. Letters are a very romantic gesture. Although it is easy to just send a text message nowadays, people who receive letters can read them over and over again. It seems more meaningful," he said.
Surprisingly, the 42-year-old turns to the telephone more often than the pen when talking about love. Currently dating actress Yoyo Mung, he says with a laugh, "I directly phone her. That way, I can hear her voice."
Still, the self-confessed romantic shared that he will often be reminded of the things he used to do for his girlfriend when he watched the romantic snippets of the movie.
He believes that Westerners and Asians have different ways of expressing their romantic side. "Westerners are often declaring their feelings and love but Asians would often keep it to themselves. We prefer the other party to feel it. Actually, this ambiguous feeling between saying it and keeping it to yourself is the most romantic."
Catch The Storm Warriors when it opens on Dec 10.
