Reform training for 2 loan-shark runners
By Elena Chong, Courts Correspondent
TWO young loan-shark runners were sentenced to reformative training on Monday for mischief by fire and damaging property.
Suhaila Azman and Nur Ibtisam Mohamed Hassan, both 20, had earlier pleaded guilty separately to setting fire to a pair of slippers infront of a flat in Bedok and a door mat and wooden door of a unit at Jurong West in July.
They also admitted defacing the wall of a staircase landing and pouring maroon paint onto the main gate and door of a unit at Hougang Central that month.
Suhaila has admitted to two other charges of writing graffiti and pouring green paint onto the main gate and door of a flat in Jurong West, and setting fire to items outside a Simei flat with Khairulanuar Hashim, 40, whose case is pending.
The Community Court had called for probation and RTC reports on the duo. Probation was not recommended but they were found suitable for RTC.
The prosecution had sought a deterrent sentence in view of the surge in the number of such cases in recent months.
