Bright idea against sleaze Front-nufatimah

IN the past two years, Dr Fatimah Lateef's 'bright idea', literally, has pleased Geylang residents who are fed up with goings-on in the dark alleys.

Ever since she entered politics in 2006, the Marine Parade GRC MP has set out to brighten up the sleazy backlanes of Geylang, which come under the GRC.

To date, her effort has led to a total of 96 new lamp posts installed in those alleys.

Now that her quest to brighten up Geylang is done, Dr Fatimah has trained the spotlight on nearby areas such as Haig Road.

Yesterday, she and 1,000 residents in the Haig Road area lit up 25 new lamps along the Haig Road connector, a 1km stretch of pavement connecting Dunman Road to Geylang Road.

This pavement is used by many residents in the Haig Road area as a short cut to get to Dunman Road and back. At night, however, vagrants would sleep there.
