G.E.M. was born in Shanghai, however, she moved to Hong Kong at the age of 4. G.E.M. was bought up in a musical family, her mother graduated from the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, her grandmother taught singing, her uncle played the violin and her grandfather played the saxophone for an orchestra. G.E.M.’s personal musical life began when she was 5 G.E.M. started to write songs, at the age of 10 G.E.M. entered many singing competitions[6] and won inter-school singing competitions . When G.E.M. was 13, she achieved grade 8 in piano. In 2006, G.E.M. entered a competition called “Spice it Up” where she won first place and was noticed by her current manager, Tan Chang, who offered her a contract with Hummingbird Music. Therefore, she became a professional singer at the age of 16. G.E.M. graduated from True Light Girls' College in Yau Ma Tei, Hong Kong, she scored 21 points in HKCEE. G.E.M. continued with her education at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts in Acoustics, as a part time student. However, her busy schedule led her to unable to attend the Acoustics Courses frequently, during the first half of 2009, she decided to quit the course.
G.E.M. was highly successful in her debut year 2008 she won 10 major awards. G.E.M. released her first EP, G.E.M.; it featured the award winning song Where Did You Go. G.E.M. also appeared on screen for the first time on TVB’s game show “耳分高下”(Boom Boom Ba)partnering Amigo (崔建邦) and on “美女廚房 2”(Beautiful Cooking 2)she was with Tak Dik (狄易達). G.E.M. won the female newcomer singer Gold award from CRHK Ultimate 903 (903專業推介 sponsored by MANHATTAN ID 信用咭) , where she became the first minor to win the award. The media gave G.E.M. nicknames such as “巨肺少女” and “巨肺小天后” literally meaning a Giant Lungs Girl and Giant Lungs Young Empress of Heaven respectively because of her vocal pitch(B♭3-E7).
During May in 2009, G.E.M. went to Los Angeles, California, to record her first studio album, 18, and has return back to Hong Kong since. In December, G.E.M. went to Toronto and Richmond Hill in Canada for her first mini-concert in Canada; she also held an autograph session in Pacific Mall, Canada
