A giant white truffle was purchased for 100,000 euros, or 150,000 dollars, by a Hong Kong restaurant owner in the northwestern Italian region of Piedmont on Sunday.
The 750-gram truffle was offered among 11 locally produced truffles at the annual auction. It fetched the highest price and the total amount paid for truffles exceeded 370,000 dollars.
The Hong Kong purchaser frequently buys truffles at auctions.
Piedmont is known for producing high-quality white truffles. But the auction organizer says the number of such truffles harvested is on the decline recently.
